Shooters Club

To encourage our players to focus on their shooting skills in the off-season, the HBA will be sponsoring the “Shooters Club”. The club is open to all traveling and in-house players registered in HBA who will be entering grades 4 through 8 next fall.

Each player will record the number of shots they make each offseason from April  1st to October 15th. As the players accumulate the number of made shots during their in-house and traveling years with the HBA they will be recognized for their off-season dedication by receiving a Shooters Club T-Shirt. Each player qualifying for an award, will have the number of shots made printed on their T-shirts.  This will be a cumulative award, with made shots being totaled through their HBA career ending the fall that they enter 8th grade.

For example, when a player makes 5,000 shots they become an entry level member of the Shooters Club. Their dedication to off-season development will be rewarded with a shirt recognizing them as a member of the “5K Shooters Club”.  The next level of recognition will be when a player accumulates 10,000 made shots.  The same recognition will occur as a player reaches the 15,000; 20,000; 25,000; and 50,000 (T-shirt and plaque) shots made levels.

All Shooters Club members will be recognized during the halftime of a Girls/Boys Varsity basketball game each year. At that game the players that have obtained Shooter’s Club status (5,000) or greater will be presented with their “Shooters Club” T-Shirt.

Players are asked to chart made shots on the “Shooter’s Club Shot Tracker”. Players and their parents are asked to validate the number of shots made during the off season by signing the bottom of the chart. Shots must be made on a 10 foot basket using proper shooting mechanics (BEEF) and should vary from free throws, lay-ups, 3 pointers, shots that will challenge the shooter but not affect proper shooting form.  Organized off-season work will be included as well. Based on parent feedback to make the program easier to administer, HBA is providing some guidelines to convert your off-season participation into made shots

  • Full Day Basketball Camps count as 500 made shots per day
  • All other organized off-season work count as 50 made shots per hour (examples include 3x3 leagues, MYAS spring basketball, open gyms, Offensive Skills Camps, ½ day Basketball Camps, and more)

Please remember the spirit of the program is to encourage off-season basketball development so get involved and focus on shooting the right way!

HBA has provided a "Shooters Club Shot Guide" to help players take shots from the age appropriate locations and distances on the court. Obviously, the older the shooter the further out the wing shots should be.  Three pointers should account for less than 5% of total shots at 5th and 6th, less than 5% at 7th and less than 10% at 8th grade.   The Shooter’s Club program loses its effectiveness if the shooter goes out and shoots 100 right hand lay ups per day to get their 5000 shots made.  There is also a limited benefit to a shooter going out and shooting nothing but three point shots.  The goal of the club is to develop well rounded, versatile effective shooters.

The signed shot chart must be turned into a HBA representative by November 1st of each year.  A player must be a registered member of HBA in order to receive recognition as a member of the Shooters Club. If you have any questions, please contact us.
